Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Abu Bakr Salem Belfaqih, who left us on December 10, 2017, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the age of 78. Yet, his voice remains eternal, firmly rooted in the Hadhrami, Yemeni, and Arab artistic memory. He was a gifted singer, composer, and poet whose rich voice enriched Arabic music and earned him UNESCO’s award for the second most beautiful voice in the world.
Abu Bakr Salem is regarded as one of the most distinguished and influential figures in modern Hadhrami and Yemeni music, making a remarkable mark on the Arab music scene. He made his debut at the age of eighteen on Aden Radio in 1956 with his first song “Ya Ward Mahla Jamalak Bain Al-Worood”, which captivated music lovers across the Arab world and was later re-performed by the late Talal Maddah. He also sang several classical Arabic poems and collaborated beautifully with poets Lotfi Jaafar Aman and Hussein Abi Bakr Al-Mahdar, forming an iconic artistic duo.
May God have mercy on the great artist Abu Bakr Salem Belfaqih.
